As one of the Community Schools Coordinators, my primary responsibility is to build strong, collaborative partnerships between the school and the surrounding community, serving the whole student. This means working closely with school staff, families, local organizations, and service providers to identify student and family needs and then coordinating the resources and supports necessary to meet those needs. I help ensure that students have access to academic, social, emotional, and health-related services that enable them to thrive both inside and outside the classroom. By fostering a welcoming, inclusive school environment and promoting active family and community engagement, I aim to create a school culture where every student feels seen, supported, and empowered to succeed.

Mikasa Melvin

Student U Community School Coordinator | Salemburg Elementary School

Mikasa's Why:

Student U’s nonstop work and dedication to the students of North Carolina stems from a deep belief in educational equity and the transformative power of opportunity. Here, we invest our time and energy in the Student U community because we know that when our students are empowered with support, resources, and high expectations, they not only thrive academically but also become leaders in their communities. This work is personal and purposeful; it’s about ensuring that every student, regardless of their background or circumstances, is seen, heard, and given the tools to succeed. Our commitment is fueled by the hope of building a brighter, more just future, one student at a time.

Mikasa outside of Student U:

Outside of Student U, I’m a proud father of two who finds joy in the everyday moments with my family. I have a deep love for basketball, whether I’m watching a game or shooting around with friends, and jazz music is the soundtrack that keeps me grounded. I’m originally from Roseboro, NC, a small town that shaped my values and work ethic. In addition to my work in education, I co-own a ladies’ clothing boutique and an ice cream shop, both of which allow me to stay connected to my entrepreneurial spirit and my community. Whether it’s through family, sports, music, or business, I’m always looking for ways to bring people together and create something meaningful.
