We are thrilled to announce that Elena Maina has officially been named the Executive Director of Student U. This moment is more than a transition in leadership—it’s a celebration of a full-circle story rooted in determination, heart, and the transformative power of education.
Elena’s connection to our mission is deeply personal. Raised in a family rich with love but limited in resources, Elena experienced firsthand the challenges so many of our students face. But she also experienced the life-changing impact of opportunity:
“My teenage years were tricky. Intelligence and athletic ability opened some doors, but the stark reality of limited income slammed many others shut. It would have been easy to sink—but a safety net caught me.”
That net included free school lunches that helped her thrive as an athlete, subsidized housing that enabled her mother to pursue college, and Pell Grants and AmeriCorps stipends that made Elena’s own college journey possible. Access to higher education didn’t just change her trajectory—it unlocked her fullest potential. It allowed her to build a bright, stable, purpose-driven life for herself and her children.
Today, as a mother of two children in Durham Public Schools—one of whom is a Student U student—Elena is leading the work to create that same foundation for children and families across North Carolina. With more than 15 years of experience in education access and student success, she brings not only expertise, but empathy and lived experience to her role.
She is a builder, a believer, and a living example of what’s possible when we invest in students.
