2023 Middle School Summer Academy Teacher

Student U middle school teachers work full-time in the summer, creating lesson plans, teaching their own classes, and working collaboratively with other teachers to engage and inspire students. Student U teachers teach a core academic class, co-lead a small reading group, and build community within their “Family” of 20 students and 4 teachers. Student U teachers are expected to be fully present at the Summer Academy which operates Monday – Friday for approximately 8 hours daily, +1.5 hour weekly staff meeting outside of normal work hours. At times, teachers may need to work outside of Student U’s hours to update lesson plans, prepare for daily classwork and talk with parents and students.

Compensation:$18 hourly rate for non-licensed teachers. $22 hourly rate for licensed teachers and certified instructors who have experience working with young people.

Commitment: Some meeting dates in the spring (listed in the job description), 7-Week Summer Program (Full-Time)

Hours Needed: ~45 hours/week during summer programming.

2023 Summer Academy High School Teacher

Our high school Summer Academy is a five-week academic enrichment program designed to support our rising 9th and 10th grade students’ academic and social transition to and through high school. Student U teachers work full-time in the summer, personalizing and teaching pre-made curriculum while working collaboratively with other teachers to engage and inspire students.

Compensation:$18 hourly rate for non-licensed teachers. $22 hourly rate for licensed teachers and certified instructors who have experience working with young people.

Commitment: Some meeting dates in the spring (listed in the job description), 7-Week Summer Program (Full-Time)

Hours Needed: ~45 hours/week during summer programming

2023 Summer Academy Mentor Teacher

Mentor Teachers are a crucial support for teachers at Student U’s Summer Academy. Each mentor supports a cohort of teachers during the instructional day at Student U’s Summer Academy in one content area (Math, Science, English, Global Connect (Social Studies), or electives). We believe our classrooms should reflect best practices in instruction, encourage academic rigor, develop critical thinking skills, and engage students in becoming change agents in their communities. Student U provides curriculum for all content classes taught at Summer Academy, and mentor teachers work to ensure new educators have the tools they need to implement and assess each unit with fidelity.

Compensation:$22/hour

Commitment: 8-Week Summer Program and additional pre-summer responsibilities in April-May

Hours Needed: ~25 hours/week

Internship Program Coordinator

Student U’s High School Program Internship Coordinator is designed for a person with strong communication and leadership skills and a desire to support students in reaching their college and career goals. The Internship Coordinator will report to the High School Program Coordinator to create an exceptional summer experience for our rising juniors and seniors.

Compensation: $17/hourly rate

Commitment:
Pre-Summer (part-time, January – June, approximately 5-7 hours/week)
Summer (full-time, June 12 – August 2, 7:30am-4:30pm)

Operations Assistant

The Student U Operations Assistant will support our Operations + Logistics Manager and the Operations Team each day during the Summer Academy to ensure that all 6-10th graders have a great summer experience. The summer operations team works to make sure each day runs smoothly – this includes everything from transportation to food, to supplies, to technology. The Operations Assistant will play an important role in making sure every day runs smoothly this summer.

Compensation:$18 hourly rate

Commitment:5 full-time weeks of 30-35 hours per week (June 26, 2023 – July 28, 2023)

High School Program Dean of Students

The Summer Academy High School Program Dean of Students will work closely with the Student U Summer Academy Leadership Team to plan, prepare and implement the High School Summer Academy Program. The Dean of Students will meet with the High School Program Team to co-plan upcoming events, discuss and manage student attendance, and manage student discipline processes and procedures.

Compensation: $17 hourly rate

Commitment: Part-Time (March-May), Full-Time (June 12th – August 2nd, 2023)

Summer Academy Program Assistants (Middle and High School)

The Middle School Program Assistant will work closely with the Student U Middle School Program Coordinators to plan, prepare and implement the Summer Academy Program. The Summer Academy High School Program Assistant will work closely with the Student U Summer Academy Leadership Team to plan, prepare and implement the High School Summer Academy Program.

Compensation:$17 hourly rate

Commitment:Part-Time (March-May), Full-Time (June 12th – August 2nd, 2023)

2022- 2023 Middle School Advocate

The Middle School Advocate role is designed for passionate individuals who believe fervently in the brilliance and potential of our students. Advocates will work daily throughout the school year with the same group or cohort of 15-20 middle school students, acting as an academic coach, and support for students. Advocates will work closely with tutors and Student U staff to ensure that each of our students receives the support, intervention, and enrichment that they need to be the most successful academic, emotional, and social versions of themselves during the school year.

Compensation: Base pay for this position starts at $15/hour

Commitment:  January 3, 2023-May 20,2023 (Monday-Thursday, 3:00pm-7:00pm) On-Site in Durham @ The WG Pearson Center.

Hours Needed: ~16 hours/week

2022-2023 High School Advocate – Hybrid Model

High school advocates will work closely with Student U’s high school staff to support students and their families as they prepare for high school graduation and college acceptance. Through this hybrid model, high school advocates will be responsible for mentoring, supporting and advocating for a small cohort of students (6-7) within their assigned school. Ideal candidates for this position will have a proven record of developing strong relationships and advocating on behalf of students and families. In addition to this, candidates will be resourceful, dedicated to the task of supporting first-generation college students, students of color, believe all children can succeed when adequately supported, and able to fully immerse into a community-driven organization.

Compensation: $18/hour

Commitment: Present – May 31st, 2023

Hours Needed: ~5-6 hours/week
