Student U, the Durham nonprofit that uses the power of education to build a just and equitable Durham, has named Michelle Price as its new Executive Director.

Price served as the Vice President for Student Supports at Communities In Schools of North Carolina (CISNC) until 2022, and prior to that role, she served as the Program Director for the Project LIFT Learning Community at Communities In Schools (CIS) of Charlotte. Over the course of more than 20 years, she has acquired the combination of leadership experience, educational preparation, relationship and team-building skills, and vision that this position requires.

“Michelle will be an excellent asset for Student U,” said Shruti Shah, Chair of the Student U Board of Directors. “She has extensive nonprofit experience, a passion for supporting students and families, and a strong focus on equity-centered leadership that will take Student U to the next level.”

Student U has three core mission work areas: whole families approach to college access and success programming, student and family-led advocacy and change efforts in Durham, and sharing best practices working with first-generation college students. As Executive Director, Price will create partnerships and relationships with the community. Her duties include staff and operational management, strategic planning, and development, in addition to managing The W.G. Pearson Center facility.

“I look forward to meeting and finding out more about all of the stakeholders in Student U, and discovering the opportunities that we have to build relationships and drive even greater impact. There is a rich history in the Hayti community, and I view that as a springboard for the history we will make together” Price said.

She begins her new position on September 12, 2022.

Amy Salo has led Student U as the Interim Executive Director since 2021. Salo is returning to her primary role as Student U’s Chief Operating Officer.

“I want to express deep gratitude to all who have supported us through this past year of transition – the staff, students, parents, partners, and donors. You have helped Student U remain the steadfast organization it is today. I am honored to have served as Interim Executive Director and I am excited to work alongside the Student U community in this next phase with Michelle at the helm of our work for a Durham where all students succeed,” said Salo.

Student U was founded in 2007. Its mission is to empower and equip first-generation college students in Durham Public Schools, their families, and educators to become the leaders that will transform our city.
