On June 25th, our DPS School Board unanimously approved a proposed reentry plan recommending that K-8 students have access to school buildings while high school students learn remotely during the upcoming fall semester. Today, an op-ed I wrote about my grave concerns about the current plan and a foundation for a comprehensive vision was published in the Indy. The vision I am advocating for us is bigger than any one of us, but is the kind of community response we need to care for each other well in this season.

We at Student U know that we are not absolved from needing to imagine a bolder, more innovative program for our young people and their families this year. We know that our own reentry plan will need to be creative, adaptable, and focused on meeting the complex needs of our families. It will require more resources and push us into areas of programming we may not have explored before. With our mission and values as our guides, we are ready for the challenge ahead. El 25 de junio, nuestra Junta Escolar de la Escuelas Públicas de Durham (DPS) aprobó en decisión unánime un plan de reingreso el cual recomienda que los estudiantes de K-8 tengan acceso a los edificios de la escuela, mientras que los estudiantes de Escuelas Preparatorias aprenderán remotamente durante el próximo semestre de otoño.  Hoy se ha publicado en la revista Indy, un artículo de opinión que escribí sobre mis preocupaciones en referencia al plan actual y una base para una visión integral. La visión que estoy defendiendo para nosotros es más grande que cualquiera de nosotros, pero es el tipo de respuesta comunitaria que necesitamos para cuidarnos en esta temporada.

En Student U sabemos que no estamos absueltos de necesitar imaginar un programa más audaz e innovador para nuestros jóvenes y sus familias este año. Sabemos que nuestro propio plan de reingreso tendrá que ser creativo, adaptable y enfocado en satisfacer las complejas necesidades de nuestras familias. Necesitará más recursos y nos empujará a áreas de programación que quizás no hayamos explorado antes. Con nuestra misión y valores como guías, estamos listos para el desafío que tenemos por delante.
