Emily's primary responsibility is to coordinate tutoring and volunteers across Student U’s Middle and High School programs, from onboarding tutors and connecting them with students to supporting them throughout the year.

Emily Guzman

Volunteer & Tutoring Coordinator (NC Literacy Corps)

Emily's Why:

I value curiosity, access, and the belief that what we learn only becomes powerful when we find the language to share it. I believe in doing good and using the gift of communication to create, connect, and help. I invest in Student U because every day gives me the opportunity to put that belief into practice by being part of a community that helps young people access the support they need to fully realize their own brilliance.

Emily outside of Student U:

Outside of Student U, I’m happiest when I’m outside with nowhere in particular I need to be. I love aimlessly long walks, finding cozy spots, inside or outside, and reading chunky books about oddly specific corners of history. I spend the rest of my time dancing, headbanging to genres of music that absolutely do not require headbanging, writing poetry I never quite finish, and laughing with the people I love. On Sundays, you can usually find me “enjoying” a Steelers game (yelling at my TV).

Advice Emily finds valuable:

“Human knowledge is never contained in one person. It grows from the relationships we create between each other and the world, and still it is never complete.” — Paul Kalanithi, When Breath Becomes Air
