Decision Day 2026 was full of emotions. This annual event is a way for graduating seniors to celebrate their accomplishments and reflect on their time at Student U. Friends and family gathered at the W.G. Pearson Center to mark the occasion. As soon as the class of 2026 walked in, a sense of pride washed over the room. Cheers and applause erupted as families held up phones to capture the moment, and students smiled at one another before taking their seats. Each graduate had the opportunity to stand on stage and announce their post-graduation plans. Some graduates will attend a four-year university, some will attend a technical school, and some will enter the workforce. While no two graduates have the same plans, each student started as a sixth grader, entering Student U for the first time. Now, they are equipped with the knowledge and support to go out into the world and leave a lasting impact.
Decision Day was more than just a celebration of what comes next. It was also a reflection of how far these students have already come. Throughout the evening, stories were shared about resilience and the importance of having a strong community behind you. Much of this success can be attributed to the support and sacrifice made by parents. Attendees had the opportunity to hear from Markeytta Witherspoon, a proud Class of 2026 parent. Witherspoon started her speech by encouraging parents to “pat themselves on the back” for all of the sacrifices they made to get their child to where they are today. She also stated, “Student U has been a part of our village, Student U will always be a part of our village.” While the class of 2026 will embark on new journeys in the fall, Ms. Witherspoon’s remarks were a great reminder that our work will not stop now. Our organization will continue to support our students as they begin a new chapter in their lives.
The impact of Student U could be felt throughout the entire room. Staff members greeted students like family, younger students looked up to the graduating seniors, and parents embraced one another after hearing their children speak. The event highlighted the supportive, encouraging community that we have built over the years.
Each graduate had the opportunity to stand before their friends and family to announce their plans. KaNora Graham, the 2026 class speaker, proudly exclaimed, “This year, in the fall, I will be attending Winston-Salem State University on a full-ride scholarship!” Graduate Xavier Evans also added, “Student U provided me with opportunities to help me learn what I want to do in the future.” As students shared their plans, the audience applauded each one. Some speeches brought laughter, and sometimes even tears. Every announcement represented years of hard work, determination, and support from both families and the Student U community. Whether students were heading to college or pursuing other goals, each graduate was celebrated with the same excitement and encouragement.
One of the most powerful parts of the evening was seeing how confident the students were as they stood on stage. Many of them reflected on how Student U helped shape who they are today, both academically and personally. It became clear that Student U is not only preparing students for graduation, but also helping them develop the confidence to pursue their goals long after high school. The event concluded with tons of pictures featuring friends, family, and students, who were sure to include their favorite Student U staff. Happy tears were shed as the class of 2026 came together to celebrate their incredible work. Graduates posed with their hats featuring their chosen college’s logo, hugged their loved ones, and gathered with classmates to celebrate the next stage of their lives. The energy in the room was joyful, emotional, and full of hope for what is ahead.
Decision Day 2026 served as a reminder that student success does not happen alone. Behind every graduate is a community of people who believed in them and encouraged them every step of the way. As the class of 2026 prepares for their next chapter, one thing is certain: they will always have a home at Student U.
